In all there are 7 islands making up the Canary Islands: Tenerife, Gran Canary, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote. Hierro, La Palma, Gomera with a combined coastline of some 1500 kilometres. The islands, in the Atlantic Ocean, lie around 115 kilometres from the North African coast and enjoy a subtropical climate which make them an ideal location throughout the year. The scenery is as diverse as one could imagine in such a small area and includes volcanoes, forests, mountains, deserts and beaches, some of which are of black volcanic sand. Each island has its own character. Surfing and windsurfing is popular in the islands and attracts many visitors. It's possible to travel by ferry between the islands but also all the islands can be reached by air.
